STP Student Speaker Award 2006

Eric Schultze, DVM, PhD, Diplomate, ACVP

Chair, STP Career Outreach Committee

The featured article that follows, titled "Chronic Microcystin Exposure Induces Hepatocyte Proliferation with Increased Expression of Mitotic and Cyclin-Associated Genes in p53 Knockout Mice," highlights much of the information presented by Dr. Shawn Clark (Purdue University) in his award-winning oral presentation at the first annual STP Student Speaker Award competition. His oral presentation was titled "Chronic Sublethal Microcystin Exposure Results in Proliferation and Changes in Mitotic Gene Expression in Homozygous p53 Knockout Mice" (Clark et al., 2006). The event took place at the Toxicologic Pathology Specialty Section at the concurrent meetings of the ACVP and the ASVCP in Tucson, AZ, in December 2006. Dr. Clark has also shared other related aspects of his research recently with readers of Toxicologic Pathology (Clark et al., 2007). For winning the competition, Dr. Clark received complimentary registration to the STP Annual Meeting, which took place in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, in June, plus a $1,000 cash award for lodging and travel to the meeting. Thanks are extended to the judges for the competition: Drs. Bruce Car (Bristol-Myers Squibb Company), Kevin McDorman (Genetech), and Eric Schultze (Eli Lilly and Company).

The second annual STP Student Speaker Award competition was held in the Toxicologic Pathology Specialty Section at the concurrent meetings of the ACVP and the ASVCP in Savannah on November 11, 2007. Dr. Tzuyin Lin (The Ohio State University) was selected the winner for her presentation titled, "The Novel HSP90 Inhibitor STA9090 Exhibits Activity Against Kit Dependent and Independent Malignant Canine Mast Cell Tumors." Dr. Lin received free registration to the next STP meeting (Hyatt Regency Embarcadero, San Francisco), plus a $1,000 cash award to be used for lodging and travel to the 2008 STP meeting. Thanks are extended to the judges for the 2007 competition: Drs. Brian Berridge (GlaxoSmithKline), Eric Blomme (Abbott Laboratories), and Eric Schultze (Eli Lilly and Company). The third annual STP Student Speaker Award competition will be held at the concurrent meetings of the ACVP and ASVCP to be held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and the Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, on November 15–19, 2008. We hope to see you there!
